Frequently Asked Questions

What are PDO threads?

PDO threads are absorbable surgical sutures composed of polydioxanone. PDO sutures are used to perform cardiothoracic surgery (such as open-heart surgery). It is one of the safest materials to be implanted in the body. The skin fully absorbs it within 4 to 6 months and it will not leave behind any scar tissue.

How do PDO threads work?

PDO threads stimulate the skin to produce collagen where they are inserted. The naturally produced collagen tightens, smooths, lifts and firms the skin. When the thread is completely absorbed naturally produced collagen is left behind.

What is a PDO Thread Lift?

Thread lifts are a relatively new form of non-surgical face lift. If your face has loosening or sagging skin and you want a tighter, fresher more youthful look, this treatment may be suitable. There are no cuts or incisions, just injections.

Are PDO Threads safe?

PDO threads have over a decade long safety track record in surgery and wound closure; specifically they have been routinely used in cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, dental procedures and cosmetic surgery. PDO threads gained FDA approval in 2004.

How quickly can I see the results of the PDO threads?

Many people see some minor results immediately after the procedure. However, the best results are seen 5 to 6 weeks after the procedure when the naturally produced collagen starts to form along the threads. Results will continue to improve over several months.

How long do the results from the PDO threads last?

The duration of results may vary between patients due to individual skin type, skin health, age, genetics, and other factors. Additionally, the result duration depends on the type of thread used, where it is placed and how many are used per treatment. In general, results last between 6 months to two years. Boosting with additional threads at 6 and 12 months will prolong and improve results.

What is the downtime with PDO threads?

Most people can return back to normal activities the next day. Mild swelling, bruising and tenderness may occur after treatment but all generally resolve within 5-7 days. Specific restrictions may be necessary depending on the area treated and types of threads used. Such restrictions are discussed upon consultation.

Which areas can be treated?

This is a very versatile treatment which can be used in areas of the face, neck and body to treat sagging brows, nasolabial lines, vertical and horizontal forehead wrinkles, drooping cheeks, marionette lines, sagging jawline, plus wrinkles and folds on the chin and neck. A customized plan of treatment with appropriate expectations of results will be discussed upon consultation.
